Reiki Ryoho
There are traditional and non-traditional approaches to Reiki practice world-wide. This variation can be attributed to how teachings were passed on, along with how they made their way from Eastern into Western cultures.
In my practice, I use traditional Reiki healing methods based on the original techniques and teachings created by Usui Sensei, Mikao Usui, in 1922.

Mikao Usui, Founder of Usui Reiki Ryoho
Originally from Kyoto, Japan, Mikao Usui was born into a Buddhist family and sought purpose and ultimate enlightenment throughout his life. In 1922, he attained a level of enlightenment he would later describe as "one great reiki." The term Reiki, is actually a combination of 2 kanji, the logographic Chinese characters taken from the Chinese script and used in the writing of Japanese: Rei (spiritual/universal) and Ki (energy/vital life force.)
In April of 1922, Usui Sensei created a system by by which to utilize the universal life force with intention, which he called Usui Reiki Ryoho (Usui spiritual energy healing method.) He also formed the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, from which he began teaching and providing sessions out of Tokyo, Japan.

Chujiro Hayashi, Founder of Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu Kai
Chiyuro Hayashi, formerly a Captain in the Japanese Navy, was among the 21 Reiki Shihans (Reiki teachers) Usui Sensei taught before his death in an effort to make sure that his system would not be forgotten.
In 1931, Hayashi Sensei opened his own clinic and school in Higashi-Shinano-cho, Tokyo called the Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu Kai.

Chiyoko Yamaguchi (1921 - 2003)
Chiyoko Yamaguchi was one of Hayashi Sensei's students. She received Reiki Ryoho (Reiki healing method) training from Hayashi Sensei at age 17. Although not fully trained as a Reiki Shihan, she did receive instruction on how to give Reiju (attunements) from her uncle, Wasaburo Sugano; also a student of Hayashi Sensei.
Primarily using Reiki for herself, her family and friends, she never opened a public Reiki Ryoho practice. However, in 1997, at the request of several people, she began teaching in an informal way.

Hyakuten Inamoto, Founder of Komyo ReikiDo
Hyakuten Inamoto, a Japanese Buddhist Monk known for his gentleness and sense of humor, was among those taught by Yamaguchi Sensei. Impressed and inspired by Reiki Ryoho, Inamoto, chose to personally delve deeper into the original teachings of Usui Sensei and learn as much as he could about Reiki practice and its origins.
In 1998, Inamoto Sensei developed the Reiki system Komyo ReikiDo: a system which follows the traditional teachings of Usui Sensei, with emphasis on the spiritual component of Reiki Ryoho. In Komyo ReikiDo, the focus is on healing the mind first, through daily Reiki Ryoho practice and the implementation of Reiki principles as a way of spiritual awakening, growth and development. It is a two-fold system with therapeutic and spiritual qualities, propagating natural healing throughout all aspects and physical components.
Cerise LaCore, Owner of Traditional Japanese Reiki
Cerise LaCore is a Certified Reiki Shihan (Teacher) offering services and teachings since 1997. She first studied Reiki practice in the early 1990's, developing a strong foundation in the western-style. Several years after creating her business - formerly called Auburn Reiki Center, now: Traditional Japanese Reiki - she met and studied with Inamoto Sensei. Preferring the more spiritual emphasis of the Japanese style of Reiki practice, Cerise now teaches traditional Japanese Reiki Ryoho exclusively.

Barbi de Varona, Owner of Reiki on my Mind
Barbi de Varona is a Chuden Level (Intermediate) Reiki practitioner in Miami, Florida. Similarly to Yamaguchi Sensei, Barbi has used Reiki therapy primarily for self-help, personal development, and casually among her family and friends since 2017. Originally taught in the western-style, Barbi made the shift into traditional Japanese Reiki Ryoho in 2020, engaged by its spiritual focus and emphasis on "healing the mind first."
